What is an adaptive landscape?

A landscape is a visual representation of multiple continuous parameters.  A landscape can be two dimensions (resulting in a line) or three dimensions (resulting in a plane). 

  • There are several kinds of landscapes, such as success or adaptive landscapes.

  • ​​An adaptive landscape or fitness landscape is a visual representation of the mean fitness of a population that is influenced by phenotypic traits, termed in evolutionary ecology as “trait values.”
